Potato Soup

1/2 onion, diced
about 7 medium potatoes, diced
1 stalk celery, chopped
2 carrots, peeled and chopped
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
salt and pepper to taste
8 oz. chicken broth
diced ham or bacon
1-1 1/2 cups half and half cream or milk
2 Tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 cup water

Place onion, potatoes, celery, carrots, garlic salt, salt and pepper, ham, and chicken broth in a saucepan. Add enough water to just cover the potatoes. Boil for about 12-15 minutes, or until potatoes are tender.
Add the cream or milk.
In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water. Add that mixture to the soup. Stir until thickened.
